Reggio Emilia is an affluent city in northern [Italy](/search?q=italy "Italy"), in the [Emilia-Romagna](/search?q=emilia-romagna "Emilia-romagna") region.
Reggio Emiliais a city innorthernItaly, in theEmilia-Romagnaregion. It has about 170,000 inhabitantsand is the main comune(municipality) of theProvince of Reggio Emilia.
The town is also referred to by its more official name ofReggio nell'Emilia. The inhabitants of Reggio nell'Emilia (calledReggiani, while the inhabitants ofReggio di Calabriaare calledReggini) usually call their town by the simple name ofReggio. In some ancient maps the town is also namedReggio di Lombardia.
The old town has an hexagonal form, which derives from the ancient walls, and the main buildings are from the 16th–17th centuries. The comune's territory is totally on a plain, crossed by theCrostolostream.
